Russ Matthews One of the greatest strengths of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been its willingness to let its heroes grow up. Rather than simply repeating familiar formulas, Spider-Man: Brand New Day embraces the consequences of the past while giving Peter Parker an opportunity to rediscover who he is. The result is one of the strongest Spider-Man films yet, balancing thrilling superhero action with surprisingly heartfelt moments.
Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has devoted himself entirely to protecting New York as its friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Yet living a life of sacrifice comes at a cost. As strange new crimes begin sweeping the city, Peter finds himself facing an increasingly dangerous threat while experiencing unexpected changes that challenge him physically, emotionally and personally.
Without venturing into spoiler territory, Brand New Day wisely embraces its fresh start. Familiar faces remain, but the story opens the door to exciting new characters and relationships that keep the franchise feeling fresh. Long-time Marvel fans will enjoy the many surprises along the way, while newcomers should have little trouble following the central story.
Tom Holland continues to prove why he remains one of Marvel’s most likeable heroes. His portrayal of Peter Parker captures the awkwardness, humour and selflessness that have defined the character for generations. Zendaya once again brings warmth and emotional depth, with the chemistry between the pair continuing to anchor the franchise, even as circumstances around them change.
One of the film’s standout additions is Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. His hard-edged, uncompromising approach to justice provides the perfect contrast to Spider-Man’s hopeful optimism. Their interactions highlight two very different visions of heroism, adding maturity and tension without ever overwhelming the heart of Peter’s story.
The action is inventive, the humour lands consistently, and the emotional stakes feel genuine. Sony may continue searching for success with its broader Spider-Man universe, but it remains clear that Peter Parker is still the heart of the franchise. Brand New Day proves once again that these films work best when they remember that behind the mask is a young man simply trying to do the right thing.
More importantly, the film reminds us that even superheroes aren’t meant to face life alone. Growth often comes through hardship, and the people who walk beside us frequently become the very reason we can keep moving forward.
What should parents know?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day contains intense superhero action, fantasy violence, frightening sequences and emotionally challenging themes. While suitable for most teenagers, some younger children may find parts of the action and several creatures or villains unsettling. As with most Marvel films, there is some mild coarse language and comic-book peril throughout.

One of the most compelling aspects of Brand New Day isn’t simply the action or the villains. It’s watching Peter Parker continue to change.
Life has a way of transforming us. New experiences, painful losses, fresh opportunities and unexpected responsibilities all shape the people we become. Sometimes those changes happen on the outside. More often, they happen deep within us.
The Bible speaks often about transformation—not simply becoming a better version of ourselves, but becoming a new creation through Jesus Christ.

Unlike the changes Peter experiences, God’s work in our lives begins with our hearts. Through Christ, we receive a fresh start that isn’t based on our past failures but on His grace. As we continue following Him, He patiently shapes us day by day into people who reflect His character.
Transformation isn’t something we accomplish on our own. It’s the ongoing work of God as He renews our minds, strengthens our faith and teaches us to live differently.
Peter Parker discovers that every new season requires him to grow.
The same is true for us.
The difference is that we never have to face that transformation alone.
