After experiencing a personal tragedy involving her thrill-seeking husband, Sasha (Charlize Theron) ventures alone into the waters of Wandarra National Park. Along the way, she encounters a group of local hunters and receives guidance from an outdoorsman named Ben (Taron Egerton). Taking his advice, she navigates the rapids and camps in a picturesque location that feeds her desire for an adrenaline rush. However, the serenity is short-lived. When she wakes the next morning, her gear has been stolen, leaving her isolated and without any means of communication. As she continues downriver, Sasha stumbles upon another campsite—only to find Ben again. What initially appears to be a lifeline soon reveals itself to be something far more sinister.

Stories like Apex draw on the edge-of-your-seat tension of films like Free Solo, while incorporating the darker human elements found in Deliverance and Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous Game. Each scene captures the desperation of survival—whether against the forces of nature or the unpredictability of human intent. The film delivers for adrenaline seekers, offering high-stakes scenarios where survival depends on physical endurance, quick thinking, and sheer determination. The rugged Australian landscape, paired with striking cinematography, enhances the intensity of every moment.

Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton fully commit to the physical demands of their roles, creating a compelling dynamic between hunter and hunted. Theron brings a grounded presence, portraying a woman wrestling with grief while fighting to survive. Egerton, meanwhile, embraces the role of the unpredictable antagonist with unsettling energy, delivering a performance that is both entertaining and disturbing.

While Apex may not break new ground in terms of story, it succeeds in delivering a visceral experience. Beneath the action lies a familiar truth: humanity itself can often be the greatest threat. For those drawn to high-intensity thrillers set against breathtaking landscapes, this film offers a gripping, if familiar, ride.

REEL DIALOGUE: We yearn to survive

Apex taps into a fundamental human instinct—the will to survive. Amid grief, betrayal, and danger, Sasha is driven not only by survival, but also by a desire to honour what she has lost.

Life’s challenges can stretch us in ways we never expect. While painful, these experiences can shape us, strengthen us, and even provide opportunities to impact others. The Bible offers a powerful example through the story of Job—a man who endured immense suffering, yet discovered a deeper understanding of faith through his trials.

Though we may not always understand the reasons behind life’s difficulties, we are reminded that hope can still be found, even in hardship.

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” — Romans 12:12
