More than a Neil Diamond tribute

Russ Matthews Neil Diamond is one of those artists who has managed to transcend a generation with his vast array of songs. (As we all hear Sweet Caroline ringing in our ears.) Like other iconic musicians, there are tribute bands and artists around the world who keep their music alive. Lightning and Thunder were a duo who built a following of their own, singing the music legend's tunes despite the difficulties they faced.
Mike Sardina, aka Lightning (Hugh Jackman), was a recovering alcoholic who struggled to find his place in this world after leaving the Marines, but music was solace for his soul. He played in various bands around Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The musician performed tributes to other artists until he met a kindred spirit in Claire Sardina, aka Thunder (Kate Hudson). The pair blended their families and music talents to form the Neil Diamond tribute band that grew in popularity across the region until a series of struggles crashed into their world and changed their musical careers forever.
Based on a documentary about the Sardina family, this story ebbs and flows between inspirational and heartrending moments, making this film difficult to define. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson commit to these roles that deemphasise the glamour that has come to define their lifestyles. Capitalising on the pair’s musical abilities, this tale literally sings when the music is playing. Yet, when they step out from behind the microphone, these actors show their dramatic chops as the family is continually hit with the harsh realities of life.
Director Craig Brewer (Footloose) surrounds the lead actors with an outstanding supporting cast and musicians who make the musical numbers shine. The glitz and glamour of the stage come to life as each scene highlights the film’s moments when the band is present. Not to say that Ella Anderson and Hudson Hensley aren’t outstanding as the Sardina children, but their moments are more heartbreaking than motivational. Yet, their performances add to the troublesome side of this family. Song Sung Blue will get you singing, dancing and crying all at the same time. As the Sardina’s bittersweet tale unfolds on screen, audiences will enjoy hearing the Neil Diamond classics while empathising with this family who overcame so much to sing.
Reel Dialogue: Where can you find hope in the suffering?
Many may come into this movie expecting to be inspired and to enjoy the Neil Diamond soundtrack, but come out thinking about how they would respond to the difficulties experienced by the Sardina family.
Throughout our lives on this earth, we strive to find comfort and seek the least painful means of living. From pain medication to alcohol to air-conditioning, being in the Western world can be relatively pain-free, but is this the true ideal? Looking back at history, mankind continues to prove that trials can bring out the best in us. Few people seek out difficulties in their lives because they come without having to look for them. When confronted by these challenges, personal development and testimonies generally show what individuals have within themselves.
This is also evident in biblical history. Each book of the Old and New Testaments shows that life’s tribulations provided real growth for people in the past, and these lessons can be a gift to us today. This is epitomised in the life and times of Jesus, whose painful end brought forward the answer for all our difficulties.
