Reel Dialogue & the Oscars

Has Hollywood survived the ‘burning’ from Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes? Well, one thing the film elites can relish in at the Academy Awards is that there is no host. Even though audiences will still have to endure political statements and the self congratulating nature of the awards.

Despite the history, millions of people around the world will be watching on 9 February (US) to see who will walk away with the lilted statue named Oscar. The film to watch is Todd Phillips’ interpretation of the origin of Batman’s greatest nemesis Joker, which received 11 Oscar nominations. The latest comic-book inspired film received nominations as best picture, best director for Phillips and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

Martin Scorsese’s move into the world of streaming at Netflix, The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino’s love letter to Los Angeles, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Sam Mendes’ World War I epic ,1917, followed close behind with 10 nominations each. Included in the best picture catagory were Ford v Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story and Parasite

Not wanting to miss out on controversy this year, the Academy neglected to include any female filmmakers in the best director race. Even though this category includes so heavy hitters,  along with Todd Phillips, the nominees include Scorsese for The Irishman, Mendes for 1917, Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Bong Joon Ho for ParasiteW

The Academy Awards will air live 9 February (US).

Reel Dialogue will give their picks and preferences from outside of the nominees who we thought should have been considered.
